Sustaining Coastal Wildlife and Habitats in a Changing Climate

Estuaries and coastal wetlands comprise less than 3% of BC’s coastline, yet they support over 80% of BC’s coastal fish and wildlife and provide critical habitat for Pacific salmon. Climate change is expected to significantly impact estuary ecosystems through a number of mechanisms, including rising sea levels, ocean acidification, temperature and salinity changes, changes to freshwater and sediment inputs.

The ocean, climate change, and the resilience of coastal communities are closely intertwined. The United Nations Ocean Decade recently endorsed the Enhancing Estuary Resilience project as an action that will help unlock ocean-based climate solutions and support coastal communities. Enhancing Estuary Resilience was endorsed under the Cultural Heritage Framework Programme as a project that addresses several Ocean Decade challenges.

Estuaries are sometimes undervalued and not given the same cachet as an old growth forest or a river system, but estuaries are the heart of the ecosystems between rivers, the ocean and different upland environments. The project is looking at whether these systems are going to be resilient over time.
